Buttercream Icing
The traditional choice for flavour and versatility. Buttercream icing is softer and more spreadable than most icings. Use for icing cakes, piping borders, writing, flowers, etc. Buttercream can also be prepared with all types of butter, resulting in a pure white icing.

  • 200g salted butter, very soft
  • 400g icing sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp Wilton Vanilla Extract


Step 1

Place 200g of butter, the vanilla extract and 1 tbsp of milk into food mixer and mix until smooth

Step 2

Gradually add the icing sugar 100g at a time until fully combined

Step 3

Add Wilton gel colour as desired

Step 4

For thin (spreading) consistency icing, add 2 tablespoons of water or milk.

Step 5


  • Keep bowl covered with a damp cloth until ready to use.
  • If using a hand mixer, beat butter and liquid first, then add sugar, as above. It may be necessary to add additional sugar for the correct consistency.
